The Cabin was open late to cater to the light-drinking crowd, and the parking lot was slowly growing more crowded.

“Hey!”

I was surprised when Brit showed up at the diner just as I was leaving.

She threw her arms around my neck. I embraced her with all the joy and love of reuniting with an old friend.

“I’m so glad you’re back. When did you get to town? How are you? Have you seen Carter yet?”

My long-time-no-see best friend was overflowing with questions. I had answers for her, but only one at a time. “I’m fine, really. Despite finding a dead guy in my shop.”

“Ooh, I heard about that from Mama. She said it was Phil Wilcox, Ryan’s dad.”

I nodded. I didn’t intend to go straight into an emotional outpouring, but I did anyway. It was like a dam broke and I let everything out.

“It was pretty gross, Brit. I found him, just lying there, with blood and stinky stuff all over the place. I don’t know why someone would want to do something like that in my grandma’s shop. It was just all so… Wrong.”

She was understanding. “I wouldn’t want to deal with that either. Especially not since you just got to town. Are you moving back then? Is it true? And what about you and Carter?”

There it was again, that assumption that my being here would somehow involve him. “My official title, as of now, is temporary manager at the quilt shop while Terri is gone. And it has nothing to do with Carter Price. He’s the chief of police now, remember? And I’ve been in town all of twelve hours. Let’s just say that I’m here for now and leave it at that. And I’m glad to see you.”

That was so true. Brit was a comfort I’d sorely needed, just as much as the warm food.

“What’s she doing over there?”

I turned to see what Brit was looking at and saw Jane Seymour. She was standing under a streetlight, near a car with her husband. They were arguing. He stomped over to the passenger side of the vehicle and opened the door, motioning for her to get inside. Jane snapped something back at him and sat down with anger in her movements. He shut the door with a slam and marched back around the car to the driver’s side. Then the car left The Cabin parking lot in a cloud of dust as Mr. Seymour took his frustrations out on the gas pedal.

“That was sad.” I commented after watching the whole odd scene.

Brit agreed. “Those two seem so unhappy, especially that Jane. Sometimes I wonder if her husband is being cruel to her or something. She always looks like she’s been crying.”

Not that it was any of my business, but I didn’t like to hear something like that. I would ask the three Quilt Ladies about it the next time I saw them and make sure Jane was alright.

“What about you, Brit?” I asked my old friend while we stood in the cool autumn air.
